La música ha demostrado ser una valiosa herramienta para profundizar en el autoconocimiento y el desarrollo emocional. Este estudio exploratorio-descriptivo indaga en las experiencias vitales musicales de un grupo de estudiantes del Grado de Maestro en Educación Primaria de la Universidad de Cantabria (España), describiendo los significados que atribuyen a la experiencia musical y los vínculos que ven entre la música y su futura labor docente, así como posibles líneas de actuación pedagógica. A través del análisis de las narraciones autobiográficas y de los grupos de discusión reflexivos, los resultados muestran la relevancia de la música en las experiencias previas y en la identificación de emociones y sentimientos, aportan información sobre contextos y estilos, y ofrecen una perspectiva de la música como recurso educativo con un fuerte potencial emocional y creativo.

In general, it can be said that cognitive development occurs with the reorganization of cognitive structures as a consequence of adaptive processes to the environment, from the assimilation of experiences and their accommodation according to the previous baggage of the cognitive structures of the learners. Forming a skill, from stimulus acquisition, to achieving mastery of a complex system of operations that is responsible for the elaboration of the information obtained from the object and contained in the knowledge, as well as the operations tending to reveal this information. If the physical or social experience conflicts with the previous knowledge, the cognitive structures are rearranged to incorporate the new experience and this is what is considered as learning. The content of learning is organized in knowledge schemas that present different levels of complexity. In the genetic development of the individual, periods of intellectual development are identified and differentiated, such as the sensory-motor period, the period of concrete operations and that of formal operations. (Piaget, 1976) considers «thought and intelligence as cognitive processes that have their basis in a determined organic-biological substrate that develops in parallel with biological maturation and growth».
